No Rest for Us Wicked

Museveni backs church against gays
Sunday, 17th August, 2008

By Milton Olupot and Daniel Edyegu

PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has praised Anglican bishops for resisting homosexuality.

“I salute the Archbishop and bishops of Africa for resisting disorientation and a decadent culture, which he said was being passed by Western nations.”

Describing homosexuality as mtumbavu (Swahili for stupid), the President said: “Don’t fear, resist and do not compromise on that. It is a danger not only to the believers but to the whole of Africa. It is bad if our children become complacent and think that people who are not in order are alright.”

Museveni was speaking yesterday as chief guest at the consecration of the Rev. Canon Patrick Gidudu, as the seventh bishop of Mbale Diocese, at St Andrew’s Cathedral. “These foreigners should go and practice their nonsense elsewhere. That is the minimum demand.”
--

Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi, who presided over the consecration, is spearheading a global protest against homosexuality.

He thanked the Government for its support. “The Anglican Church is facing significant challenges but I would like to assure you that the church is steady,” he said.

and the rest is politics as usual…

One of the things I really love about your blogging is the fact that religion plays such a huge role in most of your postings. You always make the point that you are NOT a Christian and NOT a Muslim, but you follow all the "Christian" asinine arguments and stupid announcements very (may I say) "religiously". (I keep smiling and thinking, "Perchance he doth protest too much?")

Oh, man, I wish I were nearby! You have beautiful, solid, mystical religion seeping out of every pore of your body -- but the stupid, ignorant, throw-back church-types you encounter keep dumping on you. If only I were pastor of a church near you I could tap that strong religious vein in you!!!! But then, of course, we'd probably both end up in a Nigerian prison :-)))

Keep up your criticism of the churches and the clergy! Eventually (but maybe not even in your life) those drippings will wear away the stone hearts (and twisted minds) of those faux clergy.

When I studied sociology at university, I remember a very long dissertation I read by an anthropologist who had studied homosexuality in the ancient histories of Nigerian tribes == where a gay man was thought to be "magic" and was highly honored by the tribe. I've searched and searched to find that dissertation again, but I have lost it.

But you are right, homoeroticism is NOT "Western" -- it's just that the wretched British missionaries messed up the minds of some tribal leaders and converted everyone NOT to Christianity, but to homophobia! It is 19th-century British homophobia which is "Western"! The pre-Christian tribes of Nigeria had it right!

Hey, Gug, luv ya.

Hi Bolton,

of course I do protest too much!

Well, I did hope I could live without religion, but seems as if that is something that i have not thought out thoroughly!

So, as I continue doing the thinking, I will just take the chance crying wolf whenever I can.

And you have to understand, with the pressure here in Uganda, it is kind of therapeutic. Knowing that they are wrong, being able to articulate that, on the blog, well, it does something to me, for me. Course my rants are only restricted to the internet, but, does me some good!

And yes, I do like challenging faux clergy. The Ssempa's of this world are a red rug in my sight. What attracts me to religion is the beauty of the ideals. What disgusts me with faux clergy is the blatant, self serving, and ultimately hateful way they take advantage of the 'flock'!
