Dialogue?

Do we dare believe that? Or is it just a war of words?

It has happening on two identifiable fronts. OK, on three. But, the first is almost negligble. With barely any investigation, the government is convinced that the death of David Kato was due to 'aggravated robbery'. Should I bias this further?
That Kato was staying with a known thief, who knowing that David was soon leaving the country, decided to rob him of the few things he had.... (leaving quite a few others...), and kill him in the bargain.

Now, that is the kind of insult to logic that I do not countenance at all. But, the government of Uganda being what they are, they are going to stick to that line. For a very long time.

I dismiss it as illogical, and leave the more unkind words in my mind.

But, death has this visceral shock effect. Suddenly, Ugandans are discussing homosexuality, and not with the vapid hate mongering of the other days. Of course, the Ssempas are there. And, they are talking as they do, often. But, other Ugandans are coming out and speaking, like they have never done before.

It is on the airwaves, the fm stations again. And, do not be mistaken, most of what I hear is the old homophobic things. But, there is a difference. It is less hate laced. And, those who are not homophobic are coming out and challenging the blind hatred.

Then there is this article from the Observer. Clearly sensitive, and friendly. These are the kind of articles, gay friendly, that would not be published like so, in Uganda. Ugandans are more used to the likes of the Red Rug and others like that, painting gay people like they are the worst colour possible, demons, with horns, and tails hidden somewhere.

Of course it helps a lot when there is Uganda's peers are pointing out, insistently, that we Ugandans are in the wrong. We are not insular. And, though many Ugandans may believe it is okay to kill gay ugandans, they are shocked that the rest of the world holds them in contempt. As less than 'civilised'. It is funny, I have always commented on our immense vanity. I never knew it could fall into my hands like this, as a weapon to use. Like this BBC report. And, yes, BBC is watched, by mainly those who have cable television in Uganda. The elite, the moneyed classes.
And, before you ask, growing up as a gay Ugandan, enduring the abuse and disapprobation, I have become very much less vain than the ordinary Ugandan.....
Maybe I should say that it is the 'elite', the opinion leaders who matter. And, they are quite vain of the good 'repute' of the country..... lol....!

Here is how the Christian, MP and rising star in the ruling party, mover of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill David Bahati mourns David Kato. There are some things which have clearly not changed.... and, that is the utter Christian compassion of David Bahati. Here is the quote.

David Bahati told journalists in Kampala today that though Kato's death is unfortunate, it should open Ugandans' eyes to the illegality of homosexuality.
Bahati described Kato as a humbled soul long and hard to see the future of children destroyed and marriages broken up by illegal acts.
He says though his death may have had nothing to do with his acts, it has everything to do with the financial resources set to these individuals by donors, which could have attracted the attention of the assailants.
The MP says the Police should not only investigate Kato's death, but also dismantle the illegal networks, particularly financial, which are being used to facilitate gay activities in Uganda, especially in schools. In Uganda most people feel like vomiting when they come across gay practitioners or activists.

Most interesting, and most fitting is the fact that actually, buried somewhere in all that venom is the compassion, mourning the death of David Kato. Surely, surely, Bahati is devastated. Crocodile tears . Much like Giles Muhame.... He is being his usual lovely self. Will not link to him, because, truly, Giles is an outstanding example of his pastor Martin 'eat da poo poo' Ssempa's classic teaching in Christian compassion.

Am sorry Christians. I know, the people above do not represent all of you.....

To atone for my cruel humour, I will try to examine real Christian compassion in the next post. Of course......

But, let me end this one with some interesting quotes from a Reuter's story. Kind of captures the ambivalent mood in the country at the moment.

In one sense, whether or not homophobia motivated David's killer is unimportant. A global spotlight has shone on the country in a way it rarely does and many Ugandans are unhappy with what it highlights.
------
Alan Kasujja, host of a breakfast radio show in Kampala, used his broadcast on Friday to urge Uganda to turn its back on homophobia and focus on other issues.
"I have tons of friends who are gay," Kasujja told Reuters. "These are people who I have gone to school with, who I have worked with. They are our brothers and sisters, our children.
"So am I supposed to join ill-informed, undereducated people who advocate for them to be ostracised? Sorry, I cannot be part of that," he said.
Alan says his listeners were divided over whether David was a victim of hate, or robbery. Though many listeners expressed reservations about homosexuality, they said that Uganda should not be known for violence.
Some texted the show, however, telling him to stop promoting "deviants", a reflection of a culture of hate that many say has been encouraged by the Christian right in the east African nation -- often funded by Christian groups in the United States.
Kampala's Red Pepper newspaper headlined its story on the murder: "Self-confessed bum driller murdered", accusing Kato of "luring" men into gay sex.
------
Two gay Ugandan men, poring over the newspapers on Friday morning, smiled ruefully when they saw the Red Pepper story and shrugged their shoulders.
"This is what we have to deal with day-to-day," said one, who did not want to be named. "But I listened to the radio this morning and I read Twitter yesterday and I felt some hope. Maybe this is so awful, it can change things."
The two friends finish their tea and push through the swinging doors of the cafe and out into the blistering heat.
One pauses and turns his head back.
"Do you promise you won't use my name?" he asks. "I know David didn't mind. But David ... David was... I don't know." He shakes his head sadly. "I don't know."

Just to remind you, the kind of broadcast that Alan Kasujja was allowed to do got a radio DJ (Gaetano) suspended a few years ago. And, if the anti-Homosexuality bill ever becomes law in Uganda, such a discussion will be completely illegal. Something that David Bahati is very anxious to have.

But, at least there is dialogue....!

Dire News?. Updated

Dull day.

In a way. I mean, cloud cover grey. Little sun filtering through. It is cold, and, I have had to get some warm clothing on. That is unusual. My lover is here, braving the cold. Maybe I have a slight fever? Certainly, a hacking cough. And, he was telling me I was a mite warmer than usual in bed.... didnt stop him from winding himself round me like a vine does a forest tree. Did I complain?

No. I loved it. And, was reluctant getting out of bed.

Done some work already. Had a couple of things that I slept on, dreaming of perfecting them in the morning. And, first out of bed, reading a poem, (Winfred Owen, To ___), I dove into the computer. Productive couple of hours.

And, then I have to get online.

Have decided on a novel solution for the hunger to be online all the time. Is mine, is mine, is mine. Wont share it....!

But, was immediately tickled when I got onto facebook on the phone and heard of Mubajje's pronouncements on homosexuality in Uganda.

Now, a little background. Do I need to tell you about the high feelings that homosexuality engages in Ugandans? And, should I remind you about the Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2009, which is currently stalled in Parliament? Oh, I don't need to, I hope.

Now, fast forward to this year, yesterday.

The politicians are at the polls. Criss crossing the country, looking for votes. This is supposed to be a democracy, so, regular polls to confirm the president.

Mubajje is the leader of the Moslems in the country... the legal leader. Or the regular leader... they have factions.
He hates homosexuals. Once, he wanted us to be marooned on an island on Lake Victoria. In his opinion, once marooned there, we homosexuals would die out, since we don't 'reproduce'. And, blessed Uganda would be free of us. He mentioned this 3 times. Told the President, who apparently didnt comment. At least where the press had eyes and ears.

Well, yesterday was Eid Aduha. And, as a good politician, the President was at the celebrations. To court the Muslim vote. He is shown in this pic seated, attentive, listening to the Mufti of Uganda.

Correction. The Pres was in Arua. He wasnt listening to the Mufti, who was in Kampala yesterday. My apologies

Mubajje had a captive audience, including the head of state. And, what did he say? The over aching problem of the country is nothing but homosexuality. So, we need the presidential candidates to state their position.
Mubajje asked all the presidential candidates to state their position on the “touchy” matter of homosexuality or else face the wrath of the pious religious faithful.
“We have not heard any candidate speaking on the matter of homosexuality yet it is against God’s teachings,” he said. “We are concerned about this matter as religious leaders and we are waiting for the presidential candidates’ position on the matter.” He said it was such “evils” coupled with other immoral behaviour that see nations crumble, adding that he is in agreement with other religious leaders opposed to homosexuality.
I was not there.

But, I am amused. Actually, flabbergasted.

Indeed, the American Culture wars are being fought in Uganda. Sincerely speaking, of all the problems in the country, is the problem of homosexuality so important to the national discourse on choosing a new leader? Is any of our presidential candidates pro-gay? Can they dare to be seen to be pro-gay? It is politically correct to be anti-gay in Uganda. What was Mubajje's intention here?

Indeed, there are some people for whom my sexuality is a deep and abiding passion. Why the hell it is, I don't know.

To Pastor Dr. Martin 'eat da poo poo' Ssempa is added Mufti Mubajje. Leader of all muslims in Uganda. [There is a rival Mufti. The Kibuli faction. But, I do know that they can also not be seen to contradict Mubajje on this front.]

What do I make of this?

I have always consistently observed that we gay Ugandans seem not to drive the conversation here. We react to provocation like this, and Ssempa, and Bahati. Why is it of such importance that these guys push an anti-gay agenda? I believe the answer to that question is important for the prosecution of this war. And, it is a bloody war.

Why?

No, again, I don't have answers to this question. What drove Mufti Mubajje, on the day when he assuredly had the Presidents attention, to push a relatively minor issue into the Presidential election debate and make it an issue?

I am very convinced that I am not that important. Of course, Mubajje may be trying to deflect from his failures, the allegations of corruption, the divisions amongst the moslems, the fact that there is a rival Mufti. But, the President was attending his mass. He was not at the rival Mufti's place, which I believe is actually an opposition stronghold. Why was he trying to define the Presidential campaigns with the issue of homosexuality?

I don't think it will catch on, but, I am curious. We do have some pretty persistent enemies.

With the Rolling Stone outings, carried further by the Onion and Red rug, I am now wondering whether we are actually facing an underhand but still consistent push to drag my sexuality into the national political debate.

Is it co-ordinated? I don't know. No intelligence from the enemy camp. Can only read what is in the papers. And, the fact that Bahati supports the Rolling stone 'Hang them' campaign. Really a serious wonderful Christian. Here are his assurances.
Mr. Bahati sounded a confident tone about the AHB. He expresses strong belief that there is time to get the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs committee to have public hearings and write a favorable report. He says he has been assured of this by the committee chair. He believes then that the second reading would take place and then as is often the case in the Ugandan parliament, the third reading would take place the same day.

But, as usual, I have to polish my weapons, and not let rust get onto the armour. Might be called on to fight the anti-Homosexuality bill. And, very soon at that.

I just hope it doesnt come to that. But, what power do I have to stand down this avalanche?

I have my will. And, the will of a few billion people. Even against the will of my country men, and those who casually incite violence.

Pessimistic assessment, this Wednesday morning. Hope you are feeling good and fine.

The Moral High Ground

I was over at the Throckmorton blog. There is a guy, a Ugandan. He calls himself Maazi, and he has taken it upon himself to educate these 'western gay lovers' on the pitfalls of their course of action. And, he asserts, in the name of the continent of Africa, how we shall not be intimidated into accepting the 'homosexual agenda'.

I have been kind of following the guy's seeming obsession. But, of a sudden I did lose my temper.

He is speaking in my name as an African. As a Ugandan. He discounts the fact that I am what I am, gay, African, Ugandan. Spouts hatred like it is a virtue. He is abusive, ignorant, arrogant. Certainly knows much less than the people he is debating, but, because he has a mouth, and a voice, he speaks. And very loudly.

Very similar to Ssempa. Pastor Dr 'eat da poo poo' Ssempa of infamous fame.

Ignorance is put on a pedestal and worshipped. The loudest, most demanding voice is listened too, because it is loud. And, the fact that it is stupid, ignorant, shameful is discounted. He seems to speak for me, as an African.

No. He doesnt. He shames me instead. He shames me as an African.

I came from commenting on the Throckmorton blog with the realization that we have to take back the moral high ground. The Ssempas of this world should be ridiculed as they richly deserve. Their ignorance, their hatred, their base vileness should be exposed for what it is. Thanks be to the deities that the 'eat da poo poo' monica went viral. He richly deserves the ridicule.

And, if he is stupid enough not to realise that he is showing off the paucity of his grey matter, well, it is his privilege.

In Africa, in Uganda, he seems to have the moral high ground. And, it is this piece of real estate that we should seize back from the likes of him. They are not moral, they are not Christians, the ones who want to kill and imprison whole parts of a populace, simply because they are different. The Ministers of 'Ethics and Integrity' who frankly believe that fellow human beings should forget about human rights, simply because they are homosexuals.

Yes, the Bahati's of this world should be exposed for what they are. Good that they were given the forum to do so. And, I did highlight his high lack of intellect. But, as we expose them, we should also claim the high ground by asserting their stupidity. For, that is what exactly it is. Stupidity. Crass ignorance. The worship of ignorance, in the name of ignorance. The deification of ideals, simply because a 'man of god' says so.

Saw this excellent article from the Independent. Ssempa, dear Dr 'eat da poo poo' Ssempa is the world's laughing stock. Nobody dealt that blow to him. No one but his very steps, his mouth that he opened wide, and wider and went on speaking, deeming charisma as enough of a substitute for ignorance. That is what he did.
Recently, however, Westerners have been learning more than usual about Ugandan culture. The reason for this is a YouTube video named “EAT DA POO POO,” which has been spreading virally over the internet. The video documents a series of anti-gay tirades by Ugandan Pastor, Dr. Martin Ssempa. Armed with explicit visual aids, Ssempa argues that what homosexuals do in the privacy of their bedrooms is simply far too disgusting to be protected by the law. Homosexual men, he claims, lick each other’s anuses like, “ice cream and even poo poo comes out...This one smears the poo poo all over the other one’s face.”
To date, the video has almost three million hits on YouTube, has spawned an auto-tune remix with some four-hundred-thousand hits, and is listed on Ebaum’s World, a popular archive of internet curiosities.
But, Ssempa deeply shames me. And, he shamed Uganda. As did Bahati, as he faithfully uttered what had been put in his mouth to say. Theirs is the infamy of proud ignorance.

Now, if I assert that not all Ugandans are like so, eyebrows will be raised.

But, I am a Ugandan. And true, even if I have had the luck to grow up feeling ashamed of what I am, I have to assert myself here. I am Ugandan, and, despite the pariah status of what I am, the antics of the likes of Ssempa, Bahati, Nsaba-Buturo and Maazi are deeply shameful.

It is simply matter of fact that not all Ugandans are that clueless. Not all of us are that impervious to common sense and knowledge. We don't all live back in the days of the Stone Age, glorifying ignorance as a virtue against the realities of knowledge and what the rest of the world knows as common sense.

We have to claim back the moral high ground from these nonsensical people. We simply have to.

THE Gay Agenda

On the face of it, the gay agenda seems to be a real thing…

A ‘deep, dark, vileness’… the words of Steven Langa were made very famous after the anti-homosexuality conference. A ‘creeping evil’ as David Bahati repeatedly states. These guys are actually convinced of this thing. That there is an actual ‘gay agenda’- an organized evil force that has to be fought. Of course, all in the name of Jesus, or the appropriate deities.

And, do recent events tend to show that?

Malawi caving in to international pressure. Uganda stalling in passing its ‘Anti-homosexuality bill’? Here is one Zimbabwean newspaper’s thoughts on what happened.
Gays’ pyrrhic victory in Malawi
GAYS have won a victory in Malawi through coercion and arm-twisting of the Malawi government. Malawi succumbed to extreme pressure from the USA, Great Britain and Europe in general assisted by the secretary-general of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon.
If the United Nations and western nations were as united as they are against the trampling of human rights in Africa as they have been united against the trampling of gay rights, Africa would have very few political prisoners

Oh, the language of the paper is rash, and bitter. Minorities, persecuted minorities tend to think that if others accept them, then it is better. Gay Africans usually find that we are not accepted by others, and others believe that supporting us will tarnish their own credentials. In Uganda, it is only the vileness of the anti-homosexuality bill as an attack on human rights that brought many human rights NGOs on board. They thought of us as untouchables before. But the bill was too vile. They did touch us then. Some feared, nevertheless. The Zimbabwean newspaper, not a supporter of Mugabe, continues its diatribe.
The Malawi gay couple knowingly broke the law against gay marriage; the pair was tried in a competent court of law, found guilty and sentenced according to the constitution of Malawi.
In other words, the Malawi couple should still be in jail, from the writer’s point of view. They are evildoers, breakers of the law. Why were they released? [Shake of the head- the writer, the newspaper is Zimbabwean…!]
Africa, beware of the gay agenda, it continues. This is not pretty.
Africa, beware of “gayonolisation” (a form of colonisation). Why is the West so interested in sponsoring gay couple marriages and practices? The West is well known for long-term planning — with millions of Africans dying of diseases and wars, Africa will have no replacement for its dead if the entire continent is inhabited by unproductive gays.
Hmmmmmm!

Now, we see where the gay agenda is leading. Africa is huge, rich in resources, with a small population. The gay agenda is geared towards turning all Africans into ‘unproductive gays’. Now, now, now, if I was the one who wrote those words, I might be accused of exaggeration. But, I have also been hearing the same sentiment again and again in Uganda. Minister Nsaba Buturo of Ethics and Integrity was fond of asking rhetorically, ‘What will happen when everyone is gay?’ Certainly, many fellow Africans believe that we gay Africans….!!!!!! Absurd. Silly, Stupid. But true. They do believe it.

And what of us gay Africans? Unpatriotic, fighting for the ‘western’ gay agenda…
Gays, for their part, should not crow at all for having won recognition of their unholy war because their actions are diverting attention from more serious human rights abuses all over the world. They are forcing their own acquired sexual preference on African countries.
The whole article is silly. That is a fact.

But this is the kind of serious silliness which has to be addressed.

A gay African is considered a pariah, un-African, un-patriotic. We are vilified in church, mosque, the public spheres and the private. And, fellow Africans believe the lies of gay agenda etc.
Yet, it is also a fact that the recent events in Uganda and Malawi, and Kenya, did draw a seemingly disproportionate attention from the west. Why was that?

In part, I think it is because of the realization that a proxy war is raging in Africa. The American cultural wars. I believe that is the reason why the story had such carrying power in the US. The fact that, though the west is being accused of ‘exporting’ homosexuality, a case was made and literally proven, of the export of hate- homophobia. The war did go back home, to the US… and there, there were some real advantages.

The fact that Obama is US president and not G.W. Bush, the fact that the gay lobby in the US was feeling like flexing their muscles. And the fact that the EU takes matters of equality with European seriousness….
Yet, you know, the reason I think a gay person in the west will support a gay African is because we do identify with one another. The times when gay people were killed, imprisoned, castrated, vilified- those times are not too far gone in the memories of most gay people in the west. Yes, Iceland may have gone the full course, but in Britain, Section 21 is still remembered. The Nazi extermination camps and pink triangles are not merely part of history. They are a very recent vileness. Stonewall, and the post Stonewall anger is still ongoing. I think (or would like to think!) that a gay person in the west understands the ‘less than human’ contempt that many people think we are.

During the times of Reagan, HIV raged as the US government did little, (at least that is what I have learnt from recent history!). So, gay men did what they could. They became the HIV activists. The cost was in lives of friends, lovers, acquitances lost, but the lesson was re-learnt, re-emphasized that we gay humans have to fight, and fight for our very survival.
Those lessons, the fight for gay EQUALITY rather than rights, that to me explains the phenomenon of gay comradeship, across the races, countries, continents. We are different. Adversity, persecution, that makes us the same. And will continue in the near future, I bet. Not any depraved, evil ‘gay agenda’. Just a simple, desperate, need to be understood as different, but equal; also human.

Round up. Sort of...!

I am lagging behind. Yeah, getting lazy. But, why not pass through a few of these?
---

Bahati's lies? Think I am letting them go?

No. If he lies, I will say that he lies. If he doesnt, then I will be the liar. But, I will give it a break.

I have followed it twice, and was planning another angle of the Bahati lies. But, I will give them a break. After all, the guy does claim to be a Christian. But, I will come back to them. Promise.
And, I know others have gotten the bit between their teeth. Look you here.

Ssempa?

A guy writing for In-Accuracy in the Media is going full bore. He needs a little bit of pity... But, maybe not. If you make your bed with Ssempa, you richly deserve all the benefits of that lying down place...! Here, he gets a doze of his true desserts. But, people like Ssempa rarely get embarassed by truth revealed. And, someone who may or may not support him...
Ask Rick Warren. Recently, Ssempa is blasting his mentor. Did he really sell thousands of copies of the Purpose Driven Life? I have seen it on the street corners in Kampala. So, maybe he did.

And, hope you have seen that 30 Million USD is coming to Uganda. Not into poor gayuganda's coffers. But, for AIDS research.
Ugandans will be very happy to receive that. And of course then tell you that they will retain their right to kill their gays, and write oppressive laws.

The Church of Uganda released a statement, right?
Oh, they are politicians. Trying to parse their words. But again, they didnt actually read the bill that protects the 'boy child'. Seems that they have to be referred to this one again. Here. And, if you are not convinced, check out again the Bahati Lies posts on this blog.
No. I dont want to be killed because someone, a leader, an MP decides not to respect truth as I know it. If he doesnt lie, why, let him come up and show that he does not lie. Very easy. I am inviting him.

I know the Church of Uganda was trying to play hooky with responsibility. Here, someone else dissects their lack of support for the Bahati Bill.
Indeed, their lack of support for the bill is a very clever statement. It is true that we as Ugandans sometimes justifiably take pride in our intelligence. I mean, I must protest that the likes of Ssempa are the outliers... [ahem, dont you mention Idi Amin!] But, that statement from the Church of Uganda is very clever.

Just wait till it is in the proposals make it into the bill, then I will start shooting holes into it. Let them glory in their ignorance. Ha, they even noticed that the title of the bill was a non-seller! Ha ha ha ha!

I love democracy. The right to say, I dissent is jealously guarded. It allows us to think, to question. Of course there is always a problem when one sees lunatics listened to in the name of democracy. Lunatics like the pornography showing Ssempa. Why didnt the police arrest him, by the way? Here is another point of view on the opposition to the bill. Parse words? I dont like it.

Truth Wins Out has opened, or re-opened another front on the Anti-Homosexuality Bill. There are Christian Churches that do support the Anti-Homosexuality Bill. This post from the Throckmorton Blog identifies some such. And, I am told also Box Turtle Bulletin. Now, Truth Wins Out asks Christians to ask their local churches, politely, whether they do support the bill. You never know, your local church in the US may be part of the Anglican Province of Uganda. I kid you not!
This Gay Ugandan does thank you for that action.

I know it is not my efforts in Uganda that are punching holes in the support for the Bill. Did I note the overboard support for the bill that the Church of Uganda came up with at the beginning? They were shouting things like 'imperialism' and in the face of their dear brothers and sisters in the west, because those did NOT support a genocidal bill.

I dont have to detail the statements that were made by the Provincial Secretary of the Church of Uganda, I believe he is the official spokesperson.
But now, they come out 'not' supporting the bill.

That was a coup.

Forget their play with words, supporting, not supporting, playing hide and seek. Bask in the knowledge that they were forced to read the bill, and, ultimately came out not supporting it. The Catholics were very predictable. Their doctrine is set in stone.
But, Uganda's protestants? I didnt think it possible that they would come out AGAINST the bill. Just read the Bishop of Karamoja's thoughts on the bill if you want a representative sample of the venom and hate that has been coming out of the halls of these Princes of the Church of Christ.

The moral high ground has to be undermined, to be removed from these un-Christian Christians. I know Ssempa is doing a good job of that, but there are many others who are doing the same things, all in the name  of Christ. Or, they are hiding in ignorance, supporting their leaders blindly. In most cases, those people have read their Bibles. Ask them to read the Bill. Text is here. That might have a salutary effect on their enthusiasm.

Increadibly, there are some Americans who want to be in a place like Uganda.

Such foolishness is beyond my limp imagination. Their country is built on the principles of freedom. Real freedom. But they cannot but delude themselves.
Maybe they hate homosexuals so much they would rather be in a country that jails them than one that allows them to be themselves. Americans. I do salute you. Here is an article about that very, err, tendency!

Have a great evening!

Obama Weighs in, Again.

Hey, I must say that the gay lobby in the US is strong.

He has weighed in again, and it will be interesting to see what pressure that does for Uganda. I am quite aware that it was because of the anger of the LGBT people in the US that there is this unprecedented level of intervention.

And, I cant help but note that, from this master wordsmith, the words also hold a deep meaning. Push aside the politics and push these words into Bahati, Buturo, and Ssempa's faces. Surely, surely????!!!!!

Here are the words.
We may disagree about gay marriage, but surely we can agree that it is unconscionable to target gays and lesbians for who they are — whether it’s here in the United States or, as Hillary mentioned, more extremely in odious laws that are being proposed most recently in Uganda.
Hillary Clinton also did talk, about the same issue. President Museveni has not heard the last from the Secretary of State!
Hillary Clinton talked about persecution and discrimination against gays and lesbians

Sadly, 27th Comrade will be up in arms that Obama is interfering with his right to kill gayUganda. And, I will keep telling him that I will reject my allies when I am dead. Dont know whether he gets that... Maybe he does? Or not.

And, the Congress is also weighing in with a resolution. The Senate.

Here is the text of the Bipartisan--- Yes, it was. Bipartisan. Again, for me what I see is that the appeal to a common humanity crosses partisan lines.
I know, the Ugandans will argue that the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, 2009 (text here), was actually a Bi-partisan affair, demonstrating the common 'values' of Uganda, and their horror of homosexuality. Honourable Benson Obua-Ogwal, (UPC, Moroto) and David Bahati, (NRM, Ndorwa West), were the co-sponsors.

Here is the text of the Resolution.

RESOLUTION
Calling on members of the Parliament in Uganda to reject the proposed ‘‘Anti-Homosexuality Bill’’, and for other purposes.

Whereas a bill introduced on October 14, 2009, by a member of Parliament in Uganda would expand penalties for homosexuality to include the death penalty and requires citizens to report information about homosexuality to the police or face imprisonment;
Whereas many countries criminalize homosexuality, and in some countries, such as Iran, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and Sudan, the penalty for homosexuality includes the death penalty;
Whereas the United States, in seeking to promote the core American principles of equality and ‘‘Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness,’’ has long championed the universality of human rights;
Whereas religious leaders in the United States, along with representatives from the Vatican and the Anglican Church, have stated that laws criminalizing homosexuality are unjust; and
Whereas the people and Government of the United States recognize that such laws undermine our commitment to combating HIV/AIDS globally through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) by stigmatizing and criminalizing vulnerable communities: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the Senate—
(1) calls on members of the Parliament in Uganda to reject the ‘‘Anti-Homosexuality Bill’’ recently proposed in that country;
(2) urges the governments of all countries to reject and repeal similar criminalization laws; and
(3) encourages the Secretary of State to closely monitor human rights abuses that occur because of sexual orientation and to encourage the repeal or reform of laws such as the proposed ‘‘Anti-Homosexuality Bill’’ in Uganda that permit such abuses.

I am glad that the crisis in Uganda has brought to the mind the issue of abuses of human rights of others like me, who are different because we are gay.

But, with that realisation, I still remember that the Bill, the Bahati Bill is still in parliament. And yes, it can be passed, despite this unprecedented pressure.

Dont think I have ever seen action oriented people like the Americans. So, the bill is there, right? Here are Ten things to Oppose it...! Right!

I think it is inevitable that this bill plays into the politics of the different countries. Personally, I see it as life. My life. My partner's. Life and liberty.
But, it is playing out differently in other places...

In Britain, Cameron of the Tories (yes?) wants to admit gay refugees.

Good suggestion, actually. Did I mention that Ssempa is taunting us that countries like Sweden are waiting for us? But, this tiny hostile but beautiful country of mine is MY country. Today, was in a meeting which was talking about this. I have been reading the bill again, and I do realise that I am very valuable. I nearly burst out saying, I will only leave the country when this bill becomes law.

Foolhardy, stupid, blind, deaf, dumb. That is me.

But, it is not yet law.

I heard that one of our homegrown musician is soon releasing a gay bashing music video. Will be very interesting, that. Are we going to become another Jamaica? Can this bill be killed?
Cameron wants such singers banned. In Uganda, they will be lionised.

The Family in America. Shadowy, powerful, including politicians like Bahati- or NOT.... I like the ins and outs of American politics. Open and out there, but as full as back room deals as, ahem, Britain? I liked the story that Tony Blair promised the Prime Ministership to Brown at a breakfast table... Hey, I do hear rumours! Ever heard of 'Radio Katwe'? The grapevine, in Ugandan parlace.
The Family has no identifiable Internet site, no office number and no official spokesman. J. Robert Hunter, a member who has spoken publicly about the group, said that it was unfair to blame the Family for the anti-gay legislation introduced by David Bahati. Mr. Hunter said that about 30 Family members, all Americans, active in Africa recently conveyed their dismay about the legislation to Ugandan politicians, including Mr. Bahati.
But, you know what, I have also heard of the Mafia, and the film the Godfather.... Is there any difference between the family and, and, or am I being insulting in my ignorance?

What I am really glad about is that Bahati's erstwhile mentors are challenging him, and conveying their dismay. It is kind of tough for him to blame the 'homosexual agenda' for everyone from Rick Warren to others thinking the bill is wrong.

But, will he re-think it?

Hey, as I write, the Monitor and the New Vision seem not to have got the 'news'. Will be interesting how it is spun. But, do you want to read though a hilarious and accurate analysis of what is going on in Uganda? Just check this one out. Made me smile,

and now, have to get to bed, though have barely checked all the 'news'

Be well

Knock on the Door

Yesterday was out having fun in a bar.

Left early, didnt want to repeat the 'mistakes' of Sat night. Or, the excesses,...

Today, early in the morning, as I hold my love, a phone call. Guy is inside his house, police is outside, and they are going to arrest him. A heads up.

He had known it was coming. And, he kept phoning around yesterday. We telling him to get out of his home, to stay away for some time.
He was distraught, planning to give himself up. Intimating that he was tired of running.

Desperate. Distraught.
Now, the knock early morning on the door.

We say we shall run. But, what if we cannot run? We have family, jobs, businesses. We are normal human beings. Common Ugandans. What of when we cannot run?

We live like ostritches, heads buried in the sand. We party and dance, and forget that we can be deprived of life and freedom. Because we are what we are.
I was with some friends who are HIV positive. Asked them what they think about the bill. Silence.

I think I lost my temper. Told them in detail what the bill says. If they are ever caught having sex, them, because they are positive, then they are due to have the death penalty. I dont joke, because those are the facts. Check them out at the bill text here. Or, below, the relevant section.
3. Aggravated Homosexuality
(1) A person commits the crime of Aggravated homosexuality where the-
(b) Offender is a person living with HIV.
(2) A person who commits the offence of Aggravated homosexuality shall be liable on conviction to suffer death.
(3)Where a person is charged with the offence under this section, that person shall undergo a medical examination to ascertain his or her HIV status.
4. Attempt to commit the offence of Homosexuality
(2) A person who attempts to commit the offence of Aggravated Homosexuality commits an offence and is liable on conviction to imprisonment for life.
Yes, I think I was brutal. But sometimes it is necessary. There was a lady with the guys. I told her, even you, the Bahati bill does not exclude you. You cannot have sex with your lover. If you attempt to do so, then you get life imprisonment. If you are proven to have done so, then you get the death penalty.

And, it doesnt matter whether your lover knows, whether you disclosed your status, whether there was any transmission of HIV. What matters is the letter of the law. And, that is what it says.

They were silent. I was feeling ashamed of my outburst. But, this bill is hell on earth. We cant fight it from the shadows. And, we have to fight it in the face of people who are ready to tell lies, even to the text of the bill, even when it is absolutely specific in language. Have gay sex when you have HIV, doesnt matter whether you a man or woman. On conviction, life in prison, or death. It doesnt matter that you have used any protection. It doesnt matter that you have a partner who is a consenting adult. It doesnt matter that you dont know that you are HIV positive.

The text of the bill, the text that David Bahati presented to parliament, it is that specific. It is that chilling.

You know, told you that the phone call was when I was holding my lover in my hands? We wanted to make love, but, with the news I felt down, low. And I felt I had to write this down. We have to fight this bill. It should not become law in any form at all. That is what I aim for.

And, we need to educate our country people, counter the lies that have been spread of us.
---

Believe it or not, Dr. Nsaba-Buturo says that we gay Ugandans are demanding representation in the parliament of Uganda.
It would definately not be a bad idea. No, it wouldnt. Because fellow Ugandans are on a roll, demanding death and life imprisonment for us. We need someone to defend us against the likes of Buturo.

But, that is besides the issue. We gay Ugandans are very realistic. We cannot demand that which we know we cannot get. We seek life, liberty, equality.
Buturo, to demonise us in the eyes of fellow Ugandans, raises to them the spectre that we are demanding for representation in parliament. To divert attention from the bill. From the draconian bill and its hate filled punishments.

Uganda’s minister of ethics and integrity, Nsaba Buturo has said that gays can not be represented in parliament as some of them are reportedly demanding.
Addressing the press in Kampala, Buturo said that it would be absurd if the gays are accepted to be represented in parliament.

"It would be unbelievable if gays are represented in Uganda’s parliament. That will mean that even groups of people involved in other activities like robbers and sex workers will also request to be represented in parliament," Nsaba Buturo said.
Bututro said that Ugandans can not accept annal sex because it is against the culture of Ugandans. "You go and ask most Ugandans about legalizing gays. They can not accept because it is against out culture," he said while arguing hat no member of parliament will oppose the anti- gay bill when it will be brought in parliament for debate.
And, for those of you who think that the bill is dead, hear from the Horse's mouth. from a minister in the government of Uganda
He warned gays against boasting that they havescared the government of Uganda out of debating and passing the anti-gay bill because of international criticism especially about its harshness.
Nsaba Buturo said that when Museveni told cabinet and MPs to be careful about the anti-gay bill, some gays misconstrued it to mean that he he was instructing that the bill be withdrawn. "It is not true" he said.

No. No more Mr. Nice guy about me.

And, we cant fight this bill from the dark. We cannot. That is forced upon us, but it is a necessity. We have to go on the offensive. Afterall, what will be taken from us which will not be taken when this bill becomes law?

And, we must confront the lies that are told by Ssempa. The lies, the demonisation, the frank hypocrisy. It is ironic and funny, hilarious that the best weapon we have against these hypocritical Christians is one which Jesus would appreciate. Truth. We shall fight with that weapon.

I do appreciate apologies from those who find that they have been doing us wrong. Like this Christian. But I remember that these apologies will not bring back years in prison, years of fear, years of self condemnation.
---

Yes, children are being organised against us. In rallies. And, more than that, they are being indoctrinated that we homosexuals are the worst of people.
You think I am lying? The pic below says it all.

And, remember that Ssempa invited two of his children to his very public porn show. Yes, he did.

Gay Agenda has a hilarious turn of mind on what to do when you are a gay Ugandan.... Yes, I know that I did write those things on this blog, kind of is funny that the blog gets that wide a reading!
Gratifying. But, I remind myself that the humour is a defence. This is a desperately serious topic. I will afford the humour. And, I will swipe out with the sword.
Lezgetreal was the source of the original article. And, it is hilarious as well as serious. We are in a fight for our lives, liberty. Let alone equality.

I will keep blogging. Despite those who are unconfortable with what I write. And, I am glad that others like are also determined to write and lambast Ugandans for their absolute lack of taste in killing and imprisoning gay people like me. Yes, I agree, you may have a different point of view. This is my point of view.
So to close, I will continue to blog about the Ugandan Anti-homosexuality Bill because I have a voice that costs me nothing. I will name those who support it, either intentionally, by proxy or by turning a blind eye. I will keep asking those in positions of international and corporate power to voice their support for freedom to those who have the power to make a difference. I will lend my support those in Uganda who have the incredible courage to speak up for themselves and others, because every person deserves to live a true and honest life without loss of freedom or indeed her or his life.
I am in a blitz of outing myself.

Just told another of my brother. He knew, of course. But, I have told him.

Poor Mum, I sprang it on her yesterday. Call it a crisis, I want to make sure that they know before I am out on TV or the red rug with names and all details. Seems like it will happen.

That knock on the door. I could have been mine. Maybe it will be mine. Soon.

Have a good week.

Spin on the Bahati Bill

Huh, maybe I should be glad that there is some debate that is on going.

To me, it is spin. The bill is something out of a movie about Hitler, with Bahati starring as Hitler with a twist. He is speaking words which are fed him.
Check out the text of the bill before you accuse me of hyperbole.
If the collected brains of the Cabinet of Uganda would like me to bless them with any source of sense, let them withdraw the bill. Of course I know they are dependant on the will of the Principle. Not Bahati of course. [sniff]. Museveni.

Here is the report from the Monitor, which is very, very brief. Considering the fact that the Monitor has been the paper really talking and debating the bill. The New Vision has been shutting up. When they start giving 'complete' reports, I state the obvious. The govt wants that particular spin, spin, spin. So, please, all out there, read these reports, and keep up the pressure. Let this Bill become history. If it ever becomes law, please make a commitment to hang it as an albatross around the neck of every individual who is involved in it. If we say never again, we should mean it. Never again to Genocide. Even when it is of evil gay Ugandans like me.

Here is part of what the Monitor reports
The brain behind the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, MP David Bahati, says he can amend the proposed law but “without putting the values of the country at risk”. In an interview with Daily Monitor yesterday after meeting the Cabinet on the matter, Mr Bahati said: “I cannot discuss what happened in cabinet. They are going to meet me and we discuss some amendments but the process of legislation continues.”
Before the meeting, the Ndorwa West MP had told this newspaper that he was ready to listen to the ministers’ input but added that being a Private Member’s Bill, they would not do much to it although “if they want to amend some clauses, I can do it”.
When contacted, Information Minister Kabakumba Masiko said they had decided to form a sub-committee to discuss the Bill and “see if we can amend it”.
“The sub-committee will be headed by Attorney General Khidu Makubuya but being a Private Member’s Bill and a property of Parliament, the process of legislation must continue. But the government will suggest amendments,” Ms Masiko said.
Take away one or two things. There was a meeting. Maybe there was debate. But the strategy now is.... Bahati will be the hang person if anything else happens. Courageous? Dupe. Fall guy for the international community. The cabinet washing its hands, the president coming out smelling like roses. Oh, he 'responded' to the calls of the international community.

And, check out, very carefully, the spin from the Government mouthpiece. The New Vision. Again, I must empasize, be wary what you read.

THE Cabinet has debated the controversial Anti-Homosexuality Bill now before parliament and agreed to amend it.
In a heated meeting yesterday, chaired by the second deputy Prime Minister, Henry Kajura, the Cabinet formed a committee which will deliberate on the matter before reaching a final position on the highly contested legislation.
Heated? Sigh.... At least there was some debate.
The committee, to be chaired by local government minister Adolf Mwesige, will come up with a proposal that will be forwarded to the legal, parliamentary, presidential and foreign affairs committees.

“It was a heated debate for over two hours. Those who expressed reservations fear the cutting of aid by western governments,” said a source who preferred anonymity.

“Those for it argued that we need to maintain our independence and values as a country,” the source added.

There were 21 Cabinet members in the meeting.
Huh! Must have become a very important meeting.

While broadly supported domestically, the 2009 anti-homosexuality Bill has caused a tempest abroad and anxiety from western donors who fund a large chunk of Uganda’s budget.

Those opposed to the Bill say it is discriminatory and violates human rights.

Breaking his silence on the proposed bill drawn by David Bahati, a member of the ruling NRM party, President Yoweri Museveni last week said it had become a “foreign policy issue” and needed further consultation before being voted on in parliament.

The Minister of Ethics and Integrity, James Nsaba Buturo, said: “We took note of very strong feelings which both sides of the debate have expressed.”

Asked about the Cabinet’s position on clauses proposing a death penalty, Buturo said: “I can only speak in general that there are some clauses or provisions which can be modified.”

“There is a need to have a second look at some of the issues which have been raised by the international community and some Ugandans.”
Sounds to me like he won that argument.... Yeah, that is what the whole put a good spin on this seems, to me. The cabinet decided that the bill becomes law, with a few amendments. And, when the international community protests, the government will say, see, democracy at work.

Sources said the Cabinet was divided on the clause spelling out the death penalty. After failing to agree on a position, works minister John Nasasira reportedly proposed that the Bill be delayed. His position was rejected, sources disclosed.

“Once they have got a position, we will dialogue with the committees,” Buturo explained.

“The cabinet, however, reaffirmed the obvious, that the Bill itself is a private member’s Bill. That it’s not the property of the executive,” Buturo added.
Crowing?
He further disclosed that the meeting resolved not to withdraw the Bill from parliament, being a private member’s Bill. The meeting also agreed to uphold “traditional family values”, which they said was the spirit of the Bill.

The Cabinet also discussed how to proceed following the political pressure that has come with the proposed Bill.
Yeah, of course they will.

Me, I read the tea leaves. Anyway, I just try to come to a kind of analysis of what is.
My life depends on it. But, I am still alive, and the bill is still in parliament. If anyone wants to deceive me. Well, they are welcome to try. What I do is only use my brain, a little!

Ha ha ha ha ha!

I did have to end on a note of humour.

The struggle continues.....!

Do You think David Bahati should go to US?

Well, as a Ugandan, I did state that I cant offer one opinion or another.

It is not my country. It is not me who has invited him. And, I am not paying for the trip. But, certainly, someone has. And, they do want him in the US.

Do you think the author and main Sponsor of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill of the Parliament of Uganda, David Bahati should go to the United States?

Want to read the Bill? It is here. Its aim is genocidal 'Elimination of Homosexuality' from Uganda. It is indeed an ambitious and lofty goal.

If you dont want David Bahati to enter the United States, you can send a petition to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton about this.

Click on this link, here.

And, to end my hypocrisy, I give you a smooch and a hug, after you sign that petition.

Again, the link is HERE.

Thanks!

Bahati in America.

Seems to be the hot topic.

Well, he says that he is going. He says he is attending, and, apparently he is supposed to be speaking. Share the podium with Barack Obama. Here is the Monitor link.
Mr Bahati, according to reports, may speak at the event where President Barack Obama – a gays-tolerant liberal president, is also expected to attend. On Friday, Mr Bahati said he would attend. The event is organised by The Fellowship- a conservative Christian organisation, which has deep political connections and counts several high-ranking conservative politicians in its membership.
“I intend to attend the prayer breakfast,” said Mr Bahati - himself a part organiser of the Ugandan equivalent of the national prayer breakfast.

Hot topic. He has lain his bed. He shall lie on it. Let him have joy of it.

I have no opinion on where David Bahati should travel or not. After all he is the elected representative of his people. But, I would really love to hear that he has visited his constituency, Ndorwa West, and seen the poverty and pain that his constituents live in. And, that he is doing something about them. But, most likely, he will not be visiting them soon about any developmental thing. He even hopes that the bad donors who are giving HIV drugs to people in his constituency stop because they are insisting he does not pass a bill to kill homosexual Ugandans.

But, his travel plans, and where he goes, that is for the governments and citizens where he is going. [shrug, shrug, shrug]

But, from what I am reading, people are not happy at all. Not at all. And, by people, I mean Americans who have been following this ‘Kill the Gays’ bill. One comment on this blog is that it is an opportunity for him to be arrested and tried. For inciting genocide. I guess that would happen in Holland and Spain. Not so?

Here is what one incesed guy blogs.
It's Put Up or Shut Up for Barack Obama

David Bahati, author of the Ugandan "Kill the Gays" bill, and Ugandan Ethics and Integrity Minister James Nsaba Buturo are expected to come to the United States to attend the National Prayer Breakfast.
Let's be clear: These people are proposing genocide against gays in Uganda.
They should not be granted a visa.
If Barack Obama does not want a diplomatic dispute over this, I think that he is wrong, but he then has another option: Be the first President since Dwight Eisenhower not to attend the breakfast, saying that he will not break bread with them.
If he does neither, he is immoral, and he is a coward, and he does not deserve the public trust.
It is possible that Obama will take steps to prevent this, such as pressuring "The Family", the secretive Christo-Fascist group that has organized the prayer breakfasts, to dis-invite them.
But if he sits down to break bread with people who are this deeply evil, he is giving his personal imprimatur to genocide, and anyone who supports gay rights should not support him.

No. Before you do ask me, I do not believe that David Bahati, author of this Anti-Homosexual Bill, (text here) should share a podium with any leader.

I do think that Mr Bahati has been duped. He has been lied to. He has embraced those lies. But, he is an adult human being who has CHOSEN to believe those lies without questioning, without researching them, without proving them against knowledge that is freely available in the world.

He has chosen to embrace his bill. He has chosen to write and defend a genocidal bill.

For that reason, and, because he is an adult human being, I have no compuction saying that he should not share the podium with any leader of the world. Least of all Barack Obama, who we Africans hold in iconic awe.

The only leaders he should share a podium with are Hitler of Nazi Germany. Pol Pot of Cambodia, and maybe Franco of Spain. And Idi Amin of Uganda

That is brutal, it is tough, it is rough.

But, that is what I think, and I am not going to be shy recommending that for a person who believes me and people who are like me are so bad we deserve the death penalty and life imprisonment. No. I am no Christian to turn the other cheek. He is the Christian. He should turn the other cheek. I have not yet seen him do it.

You remember when the Red Rug published names of 'tycoons' in Uganda who are 'promoting homosexuality'? One of my friends was exposed like so. He has been effectively relieved of his responsibilities, and the company seems ready to fire him. But, he is not yet fired. Looking for a 'reasonable excuse', maybe.

That is what I also risk. No, I have no compunction advocating for David Bahati having a taste of what he wants other human beings to have, what he is making sure that I have.

I hadnt noticed Dr. James Nsaba-Buturo's prayer at the recent meeting of the National Executive Committee of Uganda's ruling party. Here.
He asked the Minister of Ethics and Integrity, Dr. James Nsaba Buturo, to lead the opening prayers. Buturo prayed to God to protect Uganda against promoters of homosexuality and corruption.
Anti-gay hysteria indeed. To Ugandan Christians, and it is being rubbed in by the Churches and the pastors (if you havent, do read the post about Ssempa's World...) Homosexuality is the most prominent evil. Period.

And, I am a homosexual.

And, a promoter of homosexuality!!!!!!

Be well

Million Man March on Kampala and other things...

Hey, you see, I have been unable to round up for a long, long time. So, why not do it now?

First things first. I think that the power is being switched off in my area so that I dont have access to my blog. Ha ha ha ha! I mean, I also need a good conspiracy theory to work for me!
Anyway, fact is, we are having more blackouts than hours with electricity here. And, it is taking its toll on me. All that time when I am forced off the net. I am an addict!

Here is some good insight into the Man of the Hour. MP David Bahati. Apparently, the only insult that I, gayuganda could think of his is that he was a dupe.
Hey, bite me, but that was not an insult. It was an observation!!!!!!

Sincerely speaking, David Bahati simply does not know much about homosexuality. He is willing to go by what Stephen Langa says, (second, third hand from Richard Cohen and Lively). He believes that which he is told, by Martin Ssempa. Without question. That is why I pitied him. He is a very well meaning person who has been fed a lot of tripe, and, he believes it.
That does not mean that he is not dangerous to me. I admire his faith, his beliefs, his steadfastness. But, if he believes that I should be like him, he has got to think again. Sorry. He is a dupe. He was duped. And, he continues to be duped. Untill he wakes up and starts reasoning for his own self...... No. I am not insulting him. I am making an observation.... [sigh, I am becoming very, very bad!]

Here is the article, Bahati; the unlikely Gay Basher.

It is instructive that the author pours praise on him as a person, and then concludes with this sentence.
Perhaps a veto by the president, as recent reports have suggested is in the works, will eventually be required to halt the repressive law.
Add another person who is using the man Bahati. The President.

Sorry, I still think Bahati is a dupe....! And, he is the one who is going to come out smelling like dung. The president is going to come out smelling like roses. He always does. Bahati is the fall guy. Which is a pity, because he is well meaning.

But, he should also not forget to say what the bill really says. Because, when he lies about that....! Let me pick out another dig into the guy from this skilled report.
"I'm passionate about the issue of homosexuality because of both the danger for our children and our society," he said.
----
However, as many have pointed out, Uganda's criminal code already provides for the death penalty in cases of sexual assault or defilement of a person under 18. And besides that one provision, the bill has nothing to do with the sexual abuse of children at all. In fact, the bill's stated purpose is to prohibit "any form of sexual relations between persons of the same sex." It establishes a sentence of life imprisonment for those who commit "the offense of homosexuality."
The reporter had done the research..!
So what business does the government have with what two consenting adults of the same sex do in the privacy of their own bedroom? To Bahati what goes on between them is a crime. "If two thieves were in the bedroom, would you stop government from going there? If two terrorists were in the bedroom, would you stop government from going there? When they get out, they will influence (society). They are planning to recruit children into this behaviour."

Oh???????!!!!!!!!

Terrorists, thieves, we are planning to recruit????!!~!! Dupe. And, I will add that he does not think for himself.... Ha ha ha ha.

Ok. I was on my anniversary with my lover. 9 good years together. Bahati would get all evidence of this and plans to give me the death penalty for this. Yes he would.
At least he doesnt insist like Ssempa that he doesnt plan to kill homosexuals like me. Yes, he does....!

Have you heard the Million Man March on Kampala? Ssempa is going for broke. A million man march on Kampala to support the anti-gay bill. February 17th. I will keep my eyes pealed.

"We want to show how many people support the bill," Pastor Martin Ssempa told journalists in the Ugandan capital.
"We want to give a postcard that (Museveni) can send to his friend (U.S. President)Barack Obama," Ssempa said in front of posters saying "Africans Unite Against Sodomy" and "Barack Obama Back Off." He said the march was planned for February 17.
I am betting that, as usual, Ssempa doesnt know when to back off. But, I am a biased analyst.

I love the guy's rhetoric. The west are 'failed states' because they support gay rights. Ha ha ha ha! I must say that we Ugandans have some firebrands. Problem is, he is shaming me like Amin did. Can do without that kind of infamy!

The UN Human Rights High Commissioner weighed in.
Navi Pillay, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, added to Western criticism of the proposed legislation by saying it breached international standards. She called on Uganda to shelve it.
"The bill proposes draconian punishments for people alleged to be lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered -- namely life imprisonment, or in some cases, the death penalty," Pillay said in a statement.
That was Reuters. The Guardian adds this tidbit
"To criminalise people on the basis of colour or gender is now unthinkable in most countries. The same should apply to an individual's sexual orientation."

Pillay called on the Ugandan government to put the draft bill on hold because it breaches international human rights standards.
Have you noticed where the quotes are from? Guardian, New York Times, Reuters.... I am afraid the bill is still defining Uganda's Foreign Policy, Mr Museveni. Dont you think it is high time we withdrew it?

Not in my interest as a gay Ugandan of course (ahem, ahem). Just in the interest of the good name of Uganda!

And, are Uganda's mainstream churches starting to listen to their friends outside the country? Here is something that I have just seen. Dont know the significance.

The draconian penalties in Uganda’s proposed ‘Anti-Homosexuality Bill’ have come under sharp criticism from the Christian Churches of Uganda.
In its December 17 Christmas message, the Uganda Joint Christian Council, a coalition of the country’s Anglican, Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches, said that while its individual member churches had not yet issued formal statements on the proposed bill, all were opposed to the harsh penalties proposed for the suppression of vice.
Hey, I dont like the Churches hypocrisy. But, I realise one thing. They hold the hearts of most of my country people. So, if they pull back, even now. It will be welcome.

But, like the President, I think they are having Ssempa define them with his radicalism.

Hey, seems Jan has been interesting. And it isnt half over yet.

Feb will be interesting....!

Be well. Have no power now, so dont know when I will post again. But I will. Of course!
