Why do they Hate?

Why do they hate us so?

Sometimes, when I am really down and depressed, I start asking myself why people hate us.

Us. Generic, us gays. Why are there all the different kinds of hate? Why?

Uh, I know. Xenophobia. Tribal prejudices are very common in Uganda, and most of our African countries.

Many of the haters swear that they don't hate. Pastors Male and Ssempa say they love homosexuals. Yes, I would do without their overwhelming love, hate.
Ssempa these days doesnt want to talk to the media. But, he speaks through surrogates (how he must hate that!). Male, well, that elderly gentleman is not as charismatic as Ssempa is, but, he also shouts and rants as much as any other. Remember, in the Pastor Wars in Uganda, he was hand and glove with Ssempa in the allegations about Pastor Kayanja.

Poor guys. Recently, I passed by Miracle Center Cathedral. Kayanja is planning a huge city wide crusade. And, he has a huge bill board, rivalling those of politicians campaigning for the presidency.

Kayanja literally crushed his rivals, those who wanted to tarnish his name that he is a homosexual. I don't know whether he is.... damn, I have no wish one way or the other. Father Musaala's career was destroyed by the allegations, far as I see. Kayanja faced them, dragged them to court. And, Ssempa and Male ended with mud on their mugs. The power of money!

And, Pastor Kayanja is going as strong as ever.

Maybe the lesson there is that hate and jealousy, especially like that of Male and Ssempa does not pay. Or, they are stupid?

Why do they hate us so?

Male put his signature to this epistle. A long letter, convoluted. We are evil. Because we are homosexuals. Somehow, somewhere in that is well hidden the love. Ssempa has apparently learnt the lesson not to put his signature to epistles like that these days. But, guess who is behind it all...!

Here, Male explains everything further.

The language of love, hate- unrestrained. Foreign media 'promoting homosexuality' in Uganda.
---
And now foreign media and homosexuals are here to advance their cause, blackmailing our government, misinforming the world about the situation on the ground."
---
According to him "Pr Martin Ssempa and others in our team have on many occasions debated with homosexuals at public forums, even before the media and in the presence of the Police, intelligence and other agencies. None of the homos (homosexuals, ed) has ever been harassed. Where on earth do they get such brutalization? I need to assure the world as follows:
"No homosexual has been persecuted. Our campaign focuses on criminals who target little children below the 18 year age of consent, especially children in schools. For those who have chosen to take that sexual route, we call upon to quit.
"No homosexual has been raped, abused or killed by mobs because of hatred. In fact, many relatives of homosexuals have bleeding hearts that their loved ones are indulging. We have parents of homosexuals who have been mistreated by homosexuals.
"On the contrary, we have homosexuals using state machinery to harass their victims and the good Samaritans. This has happened in the Pr Kitaka, Pr Kiwewesi, Pr Kayanja and other homo cases." Male continues his argument saying that where victims have come up to report, they have been persecuted, framed and arrested, or their offenders have been alerted to take pre-emptive action, or even to flee
---
You see? We are liars and hypocrites. They are the saints that speak their hearts out.

Now, I dearly love this contrasting comment from Giles Muhame of the Rolling pebble. This is what he says.
"I hope basic justice will be done," he told Reuters. "Some people are even calling for public hanging and some others even want to see homosexuals buried alive."

Basic Justice indeed!. At least Giles Muhame is truthful.

I mean, I swear to the veracity of this.

During the debates on the Anti-Homosexuality bill, there was one which was televised. Agenda Uganda or something on NTV, one of the local stations. On the panel on one side was Pastor Solomon Male. On the other side was Val Kalende.

And, one of the guys in the audience, very categorically stated that the bill was not going far enough with hanging homosexuals. What he wanted was homosexuals like Val being dragged before a public firing squad, like used to happen in the days of Idi Amin.

I listened to that, sick at heart. Val was there. I don't know how she felt, have never asked her. I felt sick, disgusted. Because, to a Ugandan, those sick days are an ulcer that cannot be healed.

But, the guy said that. I didnt see the man of God Male stand up to contend that. What did Male say? Oh, in anger, at another segment, he actually supported the hanging.....

Why do they hate us so?

Oh well, they hate. And hating, they are satisfied.

It doesnt help me to dwell on that. They hate. Shrug. And, me telling them that they hate is not going to change them an iota. They hate because they hate. They will get the words to fill in the void of their 'love', but, they will continue to hate.

Why should I try to understand them? A knife driven into my chest will kill me, whether the motivation of the killer is powered by ignorance. It is ignorant hate.

Anti-gay Credentials.

Sex is always about politics. Or politics is about sex? Or the politics of sex?

One of those ‘teachable moments’ from a feminist. But, there is one thing that I had not appreciated- and that is how much MY sexuality is such a huge political tool.

In Uganda, it is a given. Be a politician, you must be anti-gay. Of course you remember what happened in Zimbabwe, where the opposition has had, per-force to come out gay bashing, because that is what is politically correct. [Latest from Zimbabwe, we are waiting for the trial. You know, I think those guys are going to be 'convicted' and then given a huge sentence so that Mugabe glories in thumbing his nose at the west. Sigh...!]

What really nauseates is the way being religious is by definition, being anti-gay.

No. I am not religious.

But that doesn’t stop me from appreciating the theory that being 'religious' one has to brush up on anti-gay credentials. Ssempa was accusing Kayanja of not being anti-gay enough soon before he came out with his ‘Kayanja is gay’ pastor wars. Orombi and the Church of Uganda drove out Bishop Ssenyonjo because he was pro-gay. Now, I have been following some of the Christian right of America… Engel of TheCall. The story is fascinating, simply because it is a microsm of the whole anti-gay ‘good Christian’ politics of America. And Uganda of course. It’s a deadly mixture. Politics. Religion. Sex. It is volatile, very.

Seems as if no one can be on the side. One cannot be a Christian, and be gay, or gay loving. No, Jesus loved all sinners but homosexuals. That seems to be the underlying theme. And gay hate is love… it is Christian love, however much gay people try to assert that Jesus’ love also included them as members of the human race.

Very interesting, and eye opening.

Why does it concern me? Because this ideaological struggle being played out on a continent thousands of miles away from me, is affecting me in ways that I would not have thought possible. Kind of funny. Thousands of miles apart, culture and politics separating us… yet our destinies intertwined because of ideaologies that concern my sexuality. I would have loved it to be just something between me and my lover…. But seems that that will not be so.

Sigh….!

Talking about Engel, it is kind of tough to say you would want me in prison because I am gay when you are a Christian (professional Christian, I call it), but Engel does articulate that point.
Influential Right Wing Evangelist Supports Uganda’s ‘Principled Stand’ on Executing Gays.
Far right evangelist Lou Engle is highly influential among the social conservative wing of the GOP (which is pretty much the entire GOP); he has hosted “prayercasts” attended by top Republican politicians including former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, and is involved in many other high profile political activities.
And this “man of God” who has the ear of the GOP leadership believes homosexuality should be criminalized; the nation he admires for their “principled stand” is Uganda.
Of course, that is the Ssempa, Bahati, and Nsaba-Buturo point of view. No wonder he was really happy to meet them in Uganda when he came.
As we show in Vanguard's "Missionaries of Hate," during TheCall Uganda, Engle surrounded himself with some of the key backers of Uganda's anti-gay legislation, including Pastor Julius Oyet, Minister of Ethics and Integrity Nsaba Buturo and the bill's author, MP David Bahati.
My musings aside, the Ssempa videos continue to get a reaction from the world. They are interesting, and infuriating. Someone gets to the point of writing an X-rated letter to Martin Ssempa. Is funny to read, and hits some points
Dr Ssempa
I cannot begin to tell you how frightening it is to know that someone like you is "fighting" HIV/AIDS with your bigotry and ignorance. I've just watched your hate filled approach here. among other clips available to the equally ignorant. The downside for you is that people like me also have access to this trash and the passion take you on personally.
I note that you hate what homosexuals do in their own homes so intently that you just couldn't help but to research it, view it and display it. Come on now, admit that it turned you on just a little bit. Because if it hadn't, you wouldn't be so eager to tell everyone about it.

Well, someone is really unhappy about Dr Ssempa’s HIV fighting credentials!!!!

Have a good day. Just watching England try to salvage some pride in the World Cup. Must say it is more interesting than the French debacle…. Was really fun to watch that world class soap opera.

Back

Of course I am.

This is like an addiction. Of course I always have to come back.

Now, the streets of Kampala have been red with the red rug. I said I dont reference that particular piece of dirt here, but, it is on their net.
Now, what they are reporting is this.

  • You know the US televangelist Ben Hinn was hit by divorce papers? That news was so big it did kind of get the attention of the faithful in Uganda. We always see him on TBN's Lighthouse television.
  • Now, the red rug says that the wife cites in the papers that Ben Hinn had sex when he came to Kampala, Uganda. Gay sex at that.
  • And, apparently the gay sex was with a prominent Ugandan preacher.
  • Have I ever mentioned here that Ben Hinn is a friend of Pastor Robert Kayanja?
And, after saying that, in true red rug fashion, do I need to go on about the essence of the red rugs allegations? Enough said. Ok, I forgot the headline. 'Benny Hinn Sodomised Top Kampala Pastor.'
--

Pastor Ssempa got so much press about the Gay Porn Shows, that he decided that there was something like too much press. So, he decided to rein it in. With a press release which seems to dig deeper the hole for the man. Oh well! If I was his public relations manager, I would fire myself...

Anyway, he continues to bear the monica, 'Uganda's Porn Peddling Pastor' Ssempa.

A most illuminating statement from him, justfying the Porn show. At least a gay porn show...!
"we have to educate ourselves about what homosexuals do."
Indeed. We have to. Any news on where the porn show will be next? I do need to educate myself too!

Odonga Otto and his slaying of a gay son. What people say in their hate of homosexuals is interesting. Very.

But, I have to sign off. My concentration is failing me. So, later...!

Irony.....!

Hey,

Just caught up this, that the Archbishop of York, the number 2 in the Church of England is not going to comment on the Anti-Homosexuality bill.

Yeah, the guy was born in Uganda. And, forgive the gentleman, he has some more than veiled interest in what is happening! I mean, remove the fact that he is the number 2 to Canterbury. And, he is Ugandan... by birth. Grew up here. Went into the diaspora during the Amin times.

He is also brother to Pastor Robert Kayanja. Yeah, he is brother to the pastor that Ssempa was accusing of being gay in the Pastor Wars.

Pastor Kayanja is very, very strong. His is 'Rubaga Miracle Cathedral'... and it is a mega church. He has recently opened a TV station in Uganda. Christian. And his ministry spans the earth. Yes, it does. He has good connections with the First Family, and has given of his accumulating wealth, judiciously. I mean, he has been giving to the police. Gifts of appreciation.

Want to know more officially? Visit his site. Robert Kayanja Ministries. And, he is a rugs to riches story. Recently, he caused a lot of envy in Uganda, talking about buying himself a personal jet. For the Lord's Work, of course.

Fast forward to 2009. And, Pastor Ssempa, and a group of other anti-gay pastors start THE crusade. To wipe out homosexuality from Uganda.
They were going very, very strong. Until they started a witch-hunt. First was a Catholic Priest, Father Musaala. I think his reputation and singing career has been effectively destroyed. Oh, the charge of homosexuality in Uganda is impossible to shake.

Father Musaala was small potatoes. He was destroyed. True!

Then, the big guns, emboldened, took aim and started shooting. Straight at Pastor Robert Kayanja. So started the Pastor Wars. And they were very interesting. Cant detail the twists and turns. You will have to read about them here.

End result, the police exhonerated Pastor Kayanja, who continues his ministry. The other pastors are in court, for defamation, and other things.... Yeah, they actually are alleged to have given money to some young men to accuse Kayanja of having been gay.

The same Kayanja who is brother to Archbishop of York Sentamu.

Small world, isnt it?

Ssentamu is known for being outspoken. But, he has declined to wade into this fire....! Have to say I dont envy his position. No comment, is the comment from him!

Brave man.

Wed morning

Beautiful day outside.

Overcast, cool to cold, and still. Maybe no rain this afternoon, but it was there yesterday, and today maybe.

Went out last eve. My lover took me out. Dinner, then a bar and music. Was fun. Good music, good crowd. It is funny how many strangers can congregate and share in the bonhomie, and have fun. Music was a little different from what the others wanted, and I did notice that there were not many kuchus, as I had expected.

But, it was good. And of course, we left early. Before it had heated up. Kuchus are fashionable, always. They show up late.
Had a long conversation with a friend about the bill. He told me he no longer feels safe in the country.
I can understand the feeling. The indignity of a bill by our countrymates, which clearly, and very succintly, plans for prison or death for us, because of what we are. Some kuchus say we shouldnt mind. That it will be un-enforcable. And, of course we have always lived under almost similar, but less harsh conditions. And, we have survived.

Are we safe?
It would be 'ostritch head in the sand like' and ignorant bravado to say that we will be safe. That Bahati bill will declare open season on homosexuals. Anyone who is accused of being homosexual will be guilty until proved innocent.
I have been following the pastor wars. Yes, they are still ongoing. And, it is notable that the Ssempa's and co are still so convinced of the righteousness of their cause in chasing after homosexuals that they are continuing to pull their beloved church apart. I guess it strikes me that, if they are so willing to tear themselves apart to pursue a vendetta against Kayanja, having arraigned, judged and damned him guilty before even any due process, I get a little concerned at the venom of my accusers.

Eh, but those are the clouds of the day. They are there. But, doesnt stop the day from being beautiful!
Where I am is quiet. I see leaves and trees, and a dance in them with the air stirring. I dont see many people, which is fine with me at the moment. Kind of gets too crowded, in this Kampala of ours. Children are at school, and the screaming high voices of their happiness are just absent. Something that I note, because they are always so, er, present.

The burden of anonymity that I have to bear is that I cannot name the places, lest I betray myself. It is a bummer. Sometimes, this picture of Kampala, of the city should have the solid bone of place names and suburbs, so that it jumps out in the mind of a reader, knowing and remembering the particular hovel, or suburb. For example, talking of Kabalagala at midnight, an instant image of bright lights, garrish, people crowds and music blaring out of every roadside shop cum bar. That is what Kabalagala is.

Its near midday, means that I will have to start doing something else.

It is fun, fun the work that I do. I love it. Sometimes, when I am not gripping about it!!!!

Have a fun day, I plan on having one

The Anti-gay faction...

First, a friend informs me that I am famous, (or infamous...) as the case maybe. I will be decidedly humble and point out that I am doing nothing big, except write about something that is....

Or, maybe, I am just funneling my underutilisation of time!!!

Anyway, following the debate that is occuring in the US and elsewhere, I have been bemused by the way that the 'Right' in America were burnt by the likes of Ssempa. I am not as expressive as I would like to be. When the anti-gay conference was held in Uganda this year, I listened to those Americans with their theoretical justifications for homophobia. They didnt know what they were doing. They just were not aware. And, I must confess that I was not fully aware... as I am not American anyway. But, one guy who took up that fight was Box Turtle Bulletin. And he did it. Opened the eyes of the American right to what they were actually doing, in the name of God. And he has continued the pressure. Just seen another thoughtful blog post that examines with incredulity what happened. It is an American again, who kind of shines more light on it than I ever would be able to. Here it is.
It sounds so easy, to jet in from America, and come and teach Ugandans the evils of homosexuality. But, they have been burnt. Very deservedly. Know your allies, always.

Checked out one other link. I have been accused of being anti-Christian...... Labels, labels, labels. Sometimes they are very inadequate. I am not a Christian. As to whether I am anti-Christian, that is for you to judge. But, a Christian writes this article and challenges other Christians. The kind of christians that are in Uganda. It is on the Christian Post, so maybe my not being a Christian will not be a log in anyone's eyes..?

Of course that does not excuse my country mates. I still am asking myself, sincerely, how can Ugandans do this? Are they aware of what they are doing?
Ok, maybe I am being naive also. I have grown up in Uganda and I know the depth of homophobia my countrymates hold. But, but, but....! Nsaba Buturo is an economics PhD...! And all the other honourable members of parliament!!!!!
Maybe I just cannot believe one thing, that the parliament of my country is considering a bill that would effectively make it legal for me to die, after due process of course. Truth is, it is something incredible, but so true that I have to pinch myself and say, yes, it is true.

Anyway, the anti-gay faction is in the news again. Pastor Martin Ssempa's Inter-faith Rainbow Coalition against Homosexuality in Uganda. First they thank the MP Bahati for tabling the motion. Apparently, it will go far in dealing with homosexuality in Uganda.
But, they have one bone of contention.
Seems as if the bill will not deal retrospectively with homosexual acts in Uganda. And, they want something to be done about this. They want the President to setup a Commission of Inquiry. If the Pres is not brave enough, well, then let parliament do it. Let them set up a commission of inquiry. So that they investigate the workings of homosexuals at all levels of society in Uganda... including, (the humour is mine of course), gay Uganda blog.... ha ha ha.
No, I dont think it is about us homosexuals. I think that is a continuation of the Pastor Wars. Ssempa was given a bloody nose, last round. And he wants Kayanja to be tarred and smeared in the relative safety of parliament. Didnt I say Ssempa is stupid?... Well, he is, egocentric, opportunistic, and he really hates people. And he does hate his fellow pastor Kayanja. All in the name of God of course. He would like nothing better than seeing him bloodied. As openly as possible. And, of course when I say that it works for us gay Ugandans, it does! At least there is that silver lining to our clouds.
Dont worry about me mentioning it here.... I am homosexual, so, what I say cannot be true, can it? Even when I point to the sins of the men of god.. how can I be truthful when am a self confessed homosexual?

Anyway, what it boils down to is that they would like an official witch-hunt of homosexuals. One that deals with past iniquities, before the new bill soon to become law takes over. Ostentiously it will be to cleanse the country so that we can move on. A final solution indeed!

Ok, I have to crawl into my hole and hide, for now...

Till I get more gossip of course!

This update

Yeah, hadnt noticed it...!

THE Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) is still studying files on allegations of sodomy against Pastor Robert Kayanja.

“Once we are done, we should be able to give a response,” Richard Butera, the director, told The New Vision on Tuesday.

In August, the Police cleared Kayanja of the allegations and instead urged the DPP to charge the four pastors who accused Kayanja of sodomy. The pastors are Martin Sempa, Moses Solomon Male, Michael Kyazze, Felix Semujju and Bob Kayiira.

“In each of the complaints of sodomy against Pastor Robert Kayanja of Miracle Centre Cathedral in Rubaga, the investigations did not reveal any evidence of such offence(s) committed,” the Police said in a report.

“I recommend that the persons who conspired and mobilised the complainants to make false allegations against Kayanja be charged with the offence of conspiracy to injure the reputation of Kayanja,” the report added.

Meanwhile, pastors under the National Coalition against Homosexuality and Sexual Abuse have appealed to President Yoweri Museveni and Parliament to institute a probe into homosexuality.

Homosexuality is on the increase in churches and schools, reportedly propagated by some human rights groups.

Muslim clerics joined the fight and called upon religious leaders, civil and government organisations to fight homosexuality, which they said was threatening the moral fibre of the Ugandan society.

The Pastor Wars; a summary

Someone went ahead and did it. And I am stealing it.

Here is the article

Uganda: Kayanja Survives Sodomy Charges

Chris Kiwawulo and Roderick Ahimbazwe25 September 2009

Kampala — THE first half of this year left its mark in the history of Uganda's Born-again church. Renowned pastor, Robert Kayanja, was accused of sodomy.

A group of five pastors and their colleagues pinned the Rubaga Miracle Centre cleric but Kayanja denied the allegations, calling them mudslinging.

The accusers were pastors Michael Kyazze, Martin Ssempa, Solomon Male, Kayiira and Semujju.

Anita Kyomuhendo and David Mukalazi were the co-accusers. The Police investigated the matter and cleared Kayanja, averting a prolonged court battle.

The allegations

Between February and April, some young men who accused kayanja of sodomy recorded statements at the Central Police Station (CPS) in Kampala and the Criminal Investigations Directorate in Kibuli. Some of the boys, like Samson Mukisa, 19 and Ivan Akansiima, 22, alleged that Kayanja had sodomised them while David Mukalazi, 36, Ronnie Mutebi, 21, Robson Matovu and James Brian Ntwatwa, 24, said he attempted to sodomise them.

Mukisa alleged that he was sodomised last year after a music competition at Kayanja's church. He claimed that after his choir, 'Group A', won the competition, Kayanja drove him in a tinted car to an unknown Kampala hotel, under the guise of congratulating him. Instead, Mukisa recounted, Kayanja sodomised him on June 25 and 26, last year. He added that thereafter, Kayanja called a medical doctor to stitch up his anus and to declare him insane.

Kayanja's bodyguards then took him to Kampiringisa Health Centre, where he spent a month, Mukisa added. After a month at Kampiringisa, a doctor examined him and declared him sane, giving him a ticket out of the place. Mukisa narrated that it was from there that he went to Omega Healing Centre in Namasuba, where he revealed his ordeal to pastors Kyazze, Semujju and Kayiira.

In his statement, Mukisa said he joined Rubaga Miracle Centre in 2003, after his father, Richard Bulega, had died. However, according to the Police, he contradicted himself by saying he stopped going to the church after the death of his father in 2003,.

He reportedly swore an affidavit commissioned by lawyer Henry Ddungu, an advocate with Sekana Associates in February 2009.

In a twist of events, however, the boys retracted their statements, claiming they had been paid to frame Kayanja. This prompted a thorough Police investigation.

Police findings

Police carried out investigations and a report, signed by Grace Akullo, the acting Police commissioner in charge of general crimes, came out on August 4. It was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The 53-page document says the complainants had retracted their statements, confessing that they had been mobilised to make false accusations against Kayanja, in order to tarnish his name.

In her notes, Akullo said the Police surgeon did not find any evidence of sodomy or attempted sodomy, apart from Mukalazi, who is still at large and is yet to be examined.

In her findings, Akullo also established that Pastor Kayiira, Herbert Tumukunde, an employee at Rubaga Miracle Centre and Gadafi Seremba, a motorcycle rider, were arrested within the church's premises on April 17.

Tumukunde, Kayiira and Seremba, who had been hired from Namasuba, planned to trespass with intent to steal property of the Miracle Centre Rubaga, the report adds.

Akullo advised that the three should be charged with criminal trespass and conspiracy to commit a crime.

The report notes that Detective Assistant Inspector of Police, Charles Okello, in his statement on April 21, said he arrested the three at Kayanja's church as they reportedly tried to pick information from a computer.

One of the complainants, Mukisa, lied about his identity. "He is not Samson Mukisa as stated in the affidavit but Robert Musasizi Kaliba," reads the report in part.

It adds that Mukisa told lies about his parents. He had earlier alleged that both his parents were dead but Police investigations revealed that his parents were still alive, the report says.

It also shows that Mukisa had never been a member of Rubaga Miracle Centre nor had he been a leader of a choir called "Group A" as alleged in the statement to the Police.

"Infact, there has never been a choir called "Group A" at Rubaga Miracle Centre, and last year, there was no music competition at Miracle Centre."

There was evidence, according to the report, that Pastor Kayanja was out of the country during the dates of the alleged sodomy and that there was no medical evidence to show that he sodomised Mukisa nor of Mukisa's stitched up anus.

"A medical report done by a Police surgeon on February 18, reveals no evidence of sodomy," Akullo noted. Besides, the Police said Kayanja had travelled to the US between June 11 and July 2, 2008.

However, Dr. Johashaphat Jombe of Mulago Hospital, in a statement on May 18, said when he examined Mukisa on March 24, "the complainant did not have any signs of a recent sodomy but had a partially patulous anus with reduced anal sphincheric tone" and sodomy could not be ruled out, the report noted.

The Police also proved that Mukisa was never at Kampiringisa Health Centre. Quoting officials from the centre, Akullo said Mukisa had never been taken there. Sarah Nassuna, a nursing assistant, Andrew Mukasa, a medical officer, Paul Namonye, a house master and Michael Alule, the principal of the rehabilitation centre, all denied having handled anyone called Samson Mukisa.

The report adds that on May 20, Mukisa, in an extra judicial statement, said the information in his affidavit and statement, both dated February 17, was false and that it was pastors Kyazze, Male, Kayiira and Ssempa who had coerced him into making the false statements against Kayanja.

Police recommendations

The Police proposed to the DPP that all the pastors who mobilised complainants against Kayanja be charged with conspiracy to injure his reputation.

Akullo recommended that Samson Mukisa, David Mukalazi, James Brian Ntwata, Robson Matovu, Ronnie Mutebi and Ivan Ankansima, be retained as witnesses in the conspiracy case.

She also recommended that the pastors be charged with giving false information to persons employed by the public service. The CID chief, Edward Ochom, described the allegations against Kayanja as 'baseless', 'fabricated' and 'full of lies'.

What the DPP says

The Police sent the file to the DPP, Richard Buteera, for perusal and he said he would get back to them with advice on the next course of action.

Kayanja's stand

Kayanja notes that in the Gospel, Jesus says a person should forgive 77 times, but he was going to seek justice because of the emotional pain the scandal had caused him and his family. "I had to forego a number of crusades and other projects to clear my name, hence the law must take its course. I have already filed a defamation case."

What do the accusing pastors say?

Pastors Ssempa and Male still insist the case was mishandled and that the Police took sides. They said they were ready to meet Kayanja in court. They have also petitioned President Yoweri Museveni, requesting him to institute a probe into the manner in which the Police handled the sodomy claims.

The two pastors, who head an NGO, the National Coalition Against Homosexuality and Sexual Abuse, suggested that a presidential commission probes how Mukisa changed his statements. The pastors maintain that they are simply representing the voiceless people, who approached them for help.

Robert Kayanja was born in 1962 in Masooli village, Wakiso district, to John and Ruth Walakira.

His father was a lay-reader in the Anglican Church.

He is the younger brother of the Archbishop of York, in the UK, John Sentamu.

He started ministry at the age of 22, around 1984.

He started the Miracle Centre as a papyrus-reed structure in Rubaga.

He is the Senior Pastor of the 10, 500-seater Cathedral, which was officially opened in 2004 by President Yoweri Museveni.

The Cathedral is reported to have been built at a cost of $7m, with glasses donated by a South Korean woman who was healed after Kayanja prayed for her.

He is also the founder of the over 1,000 Miracle Centre churches within and outside the country.

He is the overseer of the Miracle Bible College, the Never Again Children's project and the Kapeeka orphanage (children's outreaches).

He appears on the weekly Miracle Life television programmes on Lighthouse and Daystar Television networks.

He is a globe-trotter, and has been to over 50 countries, spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ.

He resides in Ggaba with his wife, Jessica (daughter of Prof. Frederick Ssempebwa), their son, Robert Kayanja Junior and twin daughters, Kirstein and Christiana.

FUFA does not discriminate; Kayanja and Ssempa

Or does it? Will Ayieko survive the smear of being labelled homosexual? At least he seems to be back in his job.

But, does FUFA discriminate or not? FIFA will want to know. If Ayieko had been 'prooved' to be a homosexual, would he still be able to play the beautiful game? Check this out.

And, the New Vision's City Beat is out. It list the top 100 Ugandan Celebrities. Hidden somewhere in the article is this sentence.

Pastor Robert Kayanja of the Rubaga Miracle Centre, at 13 was the highest ranked religious figure, followed by Martin Sempa of the Makerere Community Church.

Now, you can understand why dear Pastor Ssempa hates Kayanja so much.... It is all about, politics, stupid.

Truth and Fiction; The Pastor Wars

Dull but interesting reading. By the way, an old non-friend, the 27th Comrade has a thoughtful comment on what has been happening in Uganda with respect to Ssempa and Co. Here is his comment. It is worth a read, the POV of a bystander...! But here is the Police Report.

'Kayanja is innocent'

Written by THE OBSERVER

Monday, 10 August 2009 07:40

Investigating officers have concluded that the highly publicised sodomy allegations against Pastor Robert Kayanja were fabricated and malicious.

In fact, the officers have recommended prosecution for the pastors who allegedly mobilised six youth to make the allegations. Below is part of the CID report;

The Director of Public Prosecutions, KAMPALA

The Pastor Wars. Episode XXX…!

Remember Pastor Ssempa’s crusade of naming and shaming rivals as homosexuals? Well, he went and attacked a prominent rival, and then the police investigated. And the president was involved. And, and, and…!

Well, the saga of investigations has wound down. The hysteria and public interest was so much that the newspapers were gagged. For the time being. That shut down the allegations. But now, this increadible story is concluding, or seeming to. A reminder, there were allegations of sodomy, and of rape. There were kidnappings, and then witnesses who suddenly changed their stories. There was talk of huge monies exchanging hands. From the accusing pastors to the sodomy victims. There were whispers and rumours and rumours of whispers. And the country was in uproar, for a good month or so.

Results of the Police investigation. Fabricated charges. The good pastors (Ssempa, Male, Ssemuju, Kayira) who are god’s chosen anti-gay warriors were actually fabricating evidence to bring down a rival. All in the name of .. the Anti-Gay Agenda.

And you know Ssempa’s defence. Outrage. The police are biased, corrupt, corrupted, and fearing the political strength of Pastor Kayanja.

This soap opera is best read, not in my biased words, but in those of the Monitor Newspaper.

Police get Kayanja off the hook; charge pastors

CHRIS OBORE

Kampala

Police have cleared Pastor Robert Kayanja of Miracle Centre Cathedral of sodomy allegations. Instead, the Police have written to the Director of Public Prosecutions urging him to brings charges against four pastors who reportedly assisted some people to allege that Pastor Kayanja had sodomised them.

According to the report entitled Sodomy cases against Pastor Kayanja, a copy of which Sunday Monitor has obtained, there is no evidence to pin Pastor Kayanja.

The police investigators concluded thus: “In each of the complaints of sodomy against Pastor Robert Kayanja, the investigations did not reveal any evidence of such offence(s) committed. Further, following medical examination of the complainants, the Police surgeon did not find any evidence of sodomy.”

The report furthers states that pastors Martin Sempa, Moses Solomon Male, Michael Kyazze, Felix Semujju and Bo Kayiira reportedly influenced Pastor Kayanja’s accusers.

The Police say one of the complainants Samson Mukisa used pseudo names.

“The complainant’s real name is not Samson Mukisa as alleged in the affidavit, he is Musasizi Robert Kaliba. He has never been a member of Miracle Centre and a leader of Music Group ‘A’ and there is no Music Group ‘A’ at Miracle Centre Rubaga,” reads the police report.

The police say all the complainants retracted their earlier statements against Pastor Kayanja saying that they had been incited by the four pastors to wrongly accuse Kayanja.

“In a statement dated 15th and 20th May 2009 Mukisa retracted the allegation indicating he had not been sodomised by Pastor Kayanja but was influenced by Pastors Male, Kayira, Kyazze, Sempa and Semujju as to make the allegations,” reads the report.

“I, therefore, recommend that the persons who conspired and mobilised the complainants to make false allegations against Pastor Robert Kayanja be charged with the offence of conspiracy to injure the reputation of Pastor Kayanja, contrary to Section 392(b) of the Penal Code Act,” reads the report prepared by D/SP Grace Akullo.

Ms Akullo who is the Acting Commissioner for General Crimes also wrote: “I further recommend that the persons who were so mobilised be retained as witnesses in this case.”

The police also say Pastor Kayira and Pastor Kyazze had “planned to trespass in the Rubaga based Miracle Centre Cathedral with intent to steal property of the Miracle Centre Rubaga.”

They say Pastor Kayira was arrested from within Miracle Centre Rubaga area in company of a motorcycle rider one Seremba Gadafi whom he had hired from Namasuba.

However, the accused pastors sounded unbothered yesterday. “I have not yet seen the report but it was expected. The investigative machinery of Police is controlled by people who shield criminals,” said Pastor Male.

“The police have actually worked for Kayanja but we will be happy to be in the dock and prove that Police and Kayanja are the same,” he added.

Early this year, Pastor Kayanja paid for the sprucing up of Old Kampala Police Station in a move some people believe was to soften the ground for himself ahead of the homo scandal.

And another pastor, Martin Sempa said yesterday that “we have had low hope in the capacity of Police to be unbiased.”

“This is a travesty of justice. Even before they examined the statement of Kayanja, they had declared him innocent,” said Pastor Sempa.

He said they were shocked that police would stoop so low as to protect a powerful individual and not the victims.

“This case had drama, there were fake kidnaps and the boys were taken through a tortuous process,” he said. Pastor Ssempa however revealed that they had several other sodomy victims whom they will present to court as witnesses. He said they feared to present the victims to police because they had taken sides with Pastor Kayanja.

“Police itself is under investigation; its Police on trial,” he said adding that: “Police buildings were renovated by Robert Kayanja.” The pastors are furious that the police were hindering the fight against sexual abuse in the Church.

They said Good Samaritans were now being prosecuted for helping victims and have also called upon parents and other Church leaders to stand firm in the fight against sodomy which is a criminal offence under Uganda’s laws.

and the same from Ugpulse

Uganda Police have written to the Director of Public Prosecutions requesting him to bring charges against four pastors who reportedly assisted some people to allege that Pastor Kayanja had sodomised them.

The development is contained in the police report entitled Sodomy cases against Pastor Kayanja, a copy of which Ultimate Media has seen. The report says that Police found out no evidence to pin Pastor Kayanja.
The report furthers provides that pastors Martin Sempa, Moses Solomon Male, Michael Kyazze, Felix Semujju and Bo Kayiira reportedly influenced Pastor Kayanja’s accusers.

so the report recommends that the persons who allegedly conspired and mobilized the complainants to make false allegations against Pastor Robert Kayanja be charged with the offence of conspiracy to injure the reputation of Pastor Kayanja, contrary to Section 392(b) of the Penal Code Act

An Anti-Gay, HIV Activist

Is that possible? Logically, an HIV activist should not be anti-gay. Or is that not so logical?

I have been reading the Lancet article about HIV and gay men in Africa. Seems as if we gay Africans have been living an alternate reality. An artificial reality forced upon us and perpetuated by ignorance, by hate and by pure, undiluted conceit.

Is it possible to be an HIV activist who is rabidly and frankly anti-gay?

In Africa, it is. In Uganda it is.

Why should it be ‘impossible’? How can a person fight HIV and at the same time fight gay men, historically the most vulnerable group of human beings to HIV infection?

Reading the article, some scientific facts have been glaringly visible. Forgive me, if you are from the west and do not live the reality of an African gay man. These are things which, more than 26 years since the appearance of HIV amongst us human beings, these are facts which are known truths.

These are the facts.

  • HIV/AIDS was first identified and diagnosed amongst gay men.

  • Gay men were very quickly identified as a very high risk group to HIV. Highly vulnerable.

  • Extensive (gay men inspired) prevention programmes soon proved that the dreaded disease could be controlled. Even before drugs were available.

And what happened in Africa?

We were, (and still are), invisible.

So, it is possible for an HIV activist to be anti-gay. Who?

Ssempa of course. Pastor Martin Ssempa.

In Uganda, he has been lauded as an HIV activist. He has worn awards. He has campaigned for ‘moral’ HIV prevention. Abstinence. Being Faithful. He has gone to the US and before Congress testified about HIV and prevention in Uganda. He has earned degrees on that basis, including a doctorate (hope am not streatching the truth too much.)

Ok, he has also burnt condoms as bad HIV prevention measures. He is anti-Condom.

And the same individual is anti-gay.

He has won awards for his anti-gay activism. He has started gay witch-hunts in society, in church. His aim is clear, and he has stated it often. To Eliminate Homosexuality from the Country. He is a very (the most) vocal anti-gay activist in the country, if not on the continent. He believes that gay people are the depths of evil. And he believes that gay Africans, gay Ugandans should not have HIV prevention programmes. In his words, having an HIV prevention programme for gay Ugandans would be furthering the homosexual agenda. True, here are the exact words as quoted. “These people are just looking at ways of legitimising their practice, which is illegal and deviant in our society,” said Pastor Ssempa. “Our previous experience showed us that bringing homosexuals into campaigns against HIV only gives them a chance to propagate their illegal and unnatural acts.”

So, Ssempa believes that, it is better for gay Ugandans to get HIV than for the country’s moral purity to be risked by making sure that gay Ugandans get an HIV prevention programme.

Better to have HIV than to have homosexuals.

I know, if you are from the west, you are shaking your head. Is it possible? (Oh, I had forgotten that this illustruous HIV activist did testify to the US Congress. It is in the west...!)

Absolutely. And, just to rub some salt into the wounds of your incredulity, let me inform you that the individual is a Christian, who does all this in the name of Jesus, and loving homosexuals. He is an outstanding, upright man, fiery, hell and brimstone preacher and messenger of god.

Anyway, this would all not matter if he stayed at home and did nothing about his pet hate. Truth, if I sat back and didn’t write these articles, these posts, my incredulous examination of Ssempa would remain a personal issue. So it is with him…

Ssempa is a very powerful man, a huge fish in a small pond. Granted, he is not as huge as Kayanja, the pastor that he spitefully accused of homosexuality. But Ssempa is big. He moves in rarefied circles. He hobnobs with the president, was in fact a representative of the First Lady when he testified in the US congress. For years, he has held sway in the HIV prevention programs in the country, pushing an anti-condom, pro-abstinence and pro-faithfullnes programme in the country. His gimmicks and bombastry don’t hide the fact that he is listened to, and influences programmes.

Fact, 25 years after the start of this epidemic, gay Ugandans have just started getting access to information. To know that they are at risk, (oh, they thought they were not. After all, HIV prevention was frankly heterosexual. Why not assume that homosexual sex is risk free?) They have just learnt that oil based lubricants destroy condoms. They are learning that condoms, when used correctly, do protect. And, they are learning that the necessary, life saving, water-based lubricants are not available in the country. Yes, we are learning. Slow, but surely. It is a global village. Knowledge couldn’t be hidden completely, and forever. Let us for a moment remember the thousands of our friends who have died needlessly of HIV, who are living with a virus they could have prevented.

Granted that Ssempa follows ‘moral HIV prevention’, but God help us immoral, useless sinners. HIV prevention for those of us who are homosexual is not moral. So, by that criteria, it is entirely consistent to be an HIV activist who is fiercely anti-homosexual. Anti-gay.

He wants tougher laws, (current laws allow us to talk to other people, and to have sex. Though, if caught, we risk a life time in prison.) He doesn’t want a gay HIV prevention program in Uganda. Oh, he has worked against it, and rails that the homosexual money which comes into the country is for ‘recruitment’ of homosexuals. It is not for HIV prevention, but ‘making youths homosexual’.

Genocide?

This is a question I have asked before. Look up the word, it means the elimination of a group of people defined by a characteristic. Intentional elimination.

I cannot truthfully say that Ssempa DOESN’T know that HIV is a major problem amongst gay men. Does he want gay Ugandans to get HIV? He will say no. He doesn’t. His actions for upward of 25 years have intimated something else. He has the knowledge, but he stands in the way. His actions say he wants gay Ugandans to get HIV. He will deny them knowledge of HIV prevention. He will deny them condoms. He will deny them water based lubricant. He will allow them the ignorance of believing that they are not particularly at risk from HIV. Infection, death by hate and ignorance.

Reminds me of Jesus (read him as a philosopher and you will be surprised at the depth of his insight.) Jesus was railing against Pharisees. They stand in a doorway, and don’t enter. And they refuse every one else from entering.

Apt. Very apt.

An anti-gay HIV activist? In the virtual, un-earthly, reality of Uganda, Pastor Martin Ssempa manages to be exactly that rare, impossible thing.
