Uganda, Charm offensive, post Anti-Homosexuality Act, 2023

Dearest Uganda..,

So predictable, so predictably predictable.

So, we passed the Anti-Homosexuality Act, 2023. And thus proved how macho and good we are, beyond corruption and the evils of this world. Leading Africa in saving the world from homosexuality. In the name of the gods, and all other entities.

Our believers have been in an orgasmic ecstasy. All that they prayed for was given. The Church Of Uganda Primate giving thanks to the almighty, the Catholic Bishops pointed in their silence, the Moslems ecstatic…, and the politicians, taking laps of honour, left and right.

Now, Uganda is launching the expected charm offensive to convince partners that, no, Poor Uganda is so mis-understood…., poor Uganda. We did a ‘good’ thing. And only the haters believe otherwise. Now, you are not  a hater, are you? Because, we are so ‘misunderstood.’

Predictably, we start off with lies. Lies as pedalled by His Excellency. So, believing that the US Ambassador has not read the text, he demands, whether she has. And, yes, she has read the text

And yes. The text condemns me, a Ugandan, a homosexual. A kuchu. To life in prison [for my natural life], for the crime of having sex with my lover. Or any other lover.

And DEATH, if they catch me another time.

That is the text of the law. And know what His Excellency says…, that  no, it is not happening. That that is the law, but Ugandans are private, and no homosexuals are being [going to be] prosecuted.

Well, these homosexuals don’t believe those lies.

There’s the lesbian couple in Jinja. At least they are out on bail.

The six young men arrested in Jinja. Have no news whether they got bail. The judge refused to release them for their own safety!!!

This gentleman was accused, as was this other one, and this former catechist. This continued lie of LGBTQ+ Ugandans not being at risk of arrest because sex is a private thing… the lie is so old it is unbelievable. Glad to see the President is using it. So, why is the aim of the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 to outlaw all homosexual acts? Just outlawing private things?

Fact. All LGBTQ+ individuals are at risk in Uganda. We are at risk of being accused, of being arrested. Of being prosecuted. Of being condemned to life in prison, and death. And the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 does exactly that.

Oh yes. We can believe the President, determined to charm the Europeans and Americans, that no prosecutions of LGBTQ+ Ugandans occur. And we can stand and say, Mr. President, why tell lies?

Or at least don’t tell lies that are so easily disprovable.
